Religion ?vs? Spirituality

I posted the following comments in the B.I.D.E. BackYard and got an interesting response:

"The B.I.D.E. Blog is born. It purports to be "Spiritual Commentary on Current Events" and this Group is said to be "an aid to Seeing current events in the Light of Spirituality".
I want to kick-off discussion here by proposing that:

"Spirituality without Religion is near-fantasy
&
"Religion without Spirituality is near-boredom...

"I framed that proposal in a somewhat weird way to stimulate a hearty discussion.

'Religion' feels like man's interpretation of spirituality to me. As
diverse as humankind is, there are as many interps of spirituality -
including those using the trappings of 'Religion' merely for their own
non-spiritual gain.

Amen, Sister!
:-)

Thanks for a perceptive comment.
We may yet get into a discussion here about the real "Roots" of Religion...

There's an interesting discussion going on re this very theme on a site sponsored by a group of social scientists called Search Institute. I think it is a Lutheran sponsored, but very wide eyed org. They are seriously looking at the importance of spiritual development for children. Check into it: http://spiritualdevelopmentcenter.org/

I just love the way you characterized that group: "very wide eyed org."--Priceless

Spirituality shows the way to God and therefor spirituality would necessarily be born of religion.

Deeds are the fruit of spirituality and without those deeds religion would necessarily be empty and yes, quite boring. ~ Sandy

Religion in and of itself is not horrible. Spirituality just has more soul to it when I think about it. Religion seems restrictive rather than relational to me depending on how it is being used I suppose. Then again may be I don't know.

Well, Sandy!
I'm still learning the fine points of Blogger's software so your comment appears twice.
Actually it deserves to be here twice!

Miss Anna,
You said, "Then again may be I don't know." but just before that you made two marvelously cogent statements:
"Religion in and of itself is not horrible."
And
"Religion seems restrictive rather than relational...depending on how it is being used..."
Bravo
